NAFDAC raids fake salt, alcohol factory in Abuja

Story by Victor Itodo ABUH

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has conducted a significant raid on an illegal alcoholic beverage factory located in the Lugbe area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The operation uncovered adulterated alcoholic products and expired salt with tampered expiry dates.

During the enforcement exercise, NAFDAC intensified its crackdown on substandard and counterfeit goods, as well as rebranded products disguised as legitimate brands.

The agency’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement for the Federal Task Force, Mr. Shaba Mohammed, highlighted that Lugbe has emerged as a hotspot for the production and distribution of substandard alcoholic beverages.

Mohammed informed reporters, “This is one of many recent operations in the FCT, the counterfeit products were manufactured in a residential apartment, using fake packaging materials, often over weekends.”

He detailed that the team discovered premises where counterfeit alcohol was repackaged in used bottles with forged labels and manipulated expiration dates.

“NAFDAC has sealed the facility and summoned those responsible for further investigation,” he stated.

“We will remove the counterfeit products from the production site, and our Post-Marketing Surveillance Directorate will sweep the market to clear out any remaining items.”

Adding to the findings, Mr. Tamanuwa Andrew, the Deputy Director of Investigation and Enforcement for NAFDAC in Kaduna, reported similar activities at Wuse Market and Mararaba, a border community between the FCT and Nasarawa State.

He pointed to an increase in unregistered herbal remedies and pharmaceutical products, reinforcing NAFDAC’s commitment to heightened surveillance to safeguard public health.

He further noted that penalties for those involved in the production of counterfeit goods would be determined following further investigation.
