Man stabs 65-year-old neighbour over allegation of witchcraft

Story by Victor Itodo ABUH

A 65-year-old caretaker, Mr Monday Reuben, has reportedly been stabbed by his neighbour, identified only as Nnanna, following accusations that the elderly man was practising witchcraft.

The violent incident occurred at 37 Okwelle Street, Mile 2 Diobu, in the Port Harcourt City Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Witnesses say Nnanna attacked the victim with a broken bottle, inflicting injuries on Reuben’s neck and head, after accusing him of being responsible for his misfortunes.

According to reports, Nnanna fled the scene immediately after the attack and remains at large.

Reuben, recounting the ordeal, said: “I am the caretaker of 37 Okwelle Street, Mile 2 Diobu. Nnanna stabbed me. We were packing sand and I called him to shift one side that we wanted to pack sand.

He picked offence and said why did I call him, that ‘don’t I know I am a witch?’ And that he was bearing a grudge against me and that he would kill me and run away.

“He went and carried a bottle and broke it, he came and stabbed me. He stabbed me in the neck Tuesday night. This earlier morning, he barged into my house and stabbed me in the head.

“I am 65 years old. I want the Police and security to arrest him and ask him what I did. I have reported to Azikiwe Police Division.”

At the time of reporting, the Rivers State Police Command spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, had not provided any comment on the incident.

However, Reuben confirmed that he had already made a report at the Azikiwe Police Division and had been issued a doctor’s report for medical examination.
