The National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE) has threatened to withdraw the services of its members nationwide over the recent attacks on some commercial banks.
Following the scarcity of the redesigned naira notes, there has been chaos in various states of the nation as citizens trying to swap their old notes with the new ones are met with long queues at ATMs and slow network reception for online financial transactions.
Reacting to the violent behaviours of customers to bank officials, NUBIFIE said its workers would not resume until the attacks on its workers were addressed, and security ensured.
NUBIFIE’s general secretary, Mohammed Sheikh, in a statement on Wednesday, expressed dismay over recent attacks on bank workers without proper protection by security agencies.

Mr Sheikh, therefore, appealed to the federal government, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and various stakeholders to strive and end the hardship brought as a result of the change of cash withdrawal policy.
He also asked Nigerians, unable to access their funds deposited in banks to bear with the situation.

“We, therefore, call on the Central Bank of Nigeria to review the cash withdrawal policy, which has affected the business of over 200,000 Point of Sales businesses in Nigeria, “Mr Sheikh said.
Neptune Prime reports that violent demonstrations broke out in various states of the country due to the hardship of accessing the redesigned naira notes as the CBN dateline draws near.
It was gathered that various banking halls and ATMs were vandalised as protesters attempted to set them ablaze. Some individuals sustained injuries in the process.
