Nasarawa Court sentences robbery convict to death over 2015 killing
A High Court sitting in Nasarawa State has sentenced Saidu Idi, an armed robbery convict, to death by hanging for the killing of Hardo Adamu Buli, a resident of Kokona Local Government Area.
The judgment was delivered by the Chief Judge of Nasarawa State, Justice Aisha Mohammed Usman, who found the defendant guilty of armed robbery and culpable homicide punishable by death in connection with the incident, which occurred in 2015.
Confirming the ruling, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Isaac Danladi, said the case involved charges of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, and culpable homicide under relevant laws. He disclosed that while the court discharged Idi on the count of criminal conspiracy, he was convicted on the remaining charges.
“At the conclusion of the trial, the court found the accused guilty of armed robbery and culpable homicide and sentenced him to death by hanging,” Danladi said, describing the judgment as a clear indication that justice can be served without fear or favour.
According to the prosecution, the victim was attacked during a robbery operation in Kokona Local Government Area. Danladi explained that Hardo Adamu Buli was first shot in the navel before his assailant made away with his valuables and cash, adding that the evidence showed the killing occurred before the robbery.
In her ruling, Justice Usman held that the prosecution successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, establishing that Saidu Idi was responsible for the unlawful killing of the victim. The court ruled that the sentence was in line with the provisions of the applicable criminal laws in the state.
The verdict brings to an end a criminal case that had lasted nearly a decade and has been described as a strong statement of the judiciary’s determination to combat violent crime.
The Nasarawa State Government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, warning that individuals involved in armed robbery and other violent offences would continue to face the full weight of the law.
