NDLEA seizes 537kg of drugs, arrests 46 in Yobe

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Yobe State has reported the seizure of over 537 kilograms of illicit drugs and the arrest of 46 suspects in 2024.

In a statement on Tuesday in Damaturu, NDLEA Commander Mr. Abdulazeez Ogungboye reviewed the agency’s activities for the year. He revealed that the confiscated drugs included 396.526 kg of marijuana and 141.2 kg of psychotropic substances.

Ogungboye also shared that the agency had secured 21 convictions out of 46 individuals charged, with 85 cases still pending at the Federal High Court in Damaturu.

Additionally, the NDLEA provided counseling to 219 drug-dependent individuals and carried out awareness campaigns in communities, schools, religious organizations, and workplaces. The agency’s mini rehabilitation center successfully graduated five individuals after a three-month program, and five rural outposts were established to extend the outreach.

He called on the Yobe State government to establish a proper rehabilitation center to replace the current improvised facility with a capacity of only 16 inmates.

Ogungboye expressed gratitude to the Mai Mala Buni-led administration and other partner agencies for their support throughout the year. He reaffirmed the NDLEA’s commitment to promoting a drug-free society.
