The gains of hosting the 5th Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum in Maiduguri, by Abubakar M. Kareto
We expect over 600 delegates to attend the 5th Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum in Maiduguri. The delegates will come from different countries and different continents.
A high-profile event that will garner interest from the AU, UN, USAID, and other international organisations, assembling governors, regional institutions, partners, donors, and CSOs to discuss regional peace and security, will surely draw a large and diverse audience.
The event will be under the leadership of His Excellency Governor Mai Mala Buni (CON) and will take place from January 29th to 31st at the Muhammadu Indimi International Conference Centre, University of Maiduguri.
We should all rejoice in the fact that hosting summits like these is beneficial. Hosting an international event like this can do wonders for a country’s economy. Not only that, but it brings in tourists, puts the country’s culture on display, raises its profile internationally, encourages better relations between nations, and spurs economic growth in the host city or region. It’s like putting a destination on the global stage and getting positive publicity from all the visitors and media.
However, the main advantage that I find most appealing is the significant increase in the number of tourists, which will generate a lot of income for the tourism, hospitality, and allied industries.
In these kinds of cases, I often bring up Rwanda as an example. Rwanda has a reputation for hosting major international, continental, and regional events. Because of the benefits it offers, they fight for hosting rights. In addition to attracting tourists, these events provide political and diplomatic forums that boost the host country’s profile internationally. Consequently, Rwanda has become, and remains to be, a reliable ally to global organisations.
We should all thank Yobe for his brotherly choice to have this historic event in Maiduguri. It is still commendable, even though we can comprehend the reasons for the decision. Everything that happens in Borno affects Yobe, and vice versa, as I’ve said before.
To those who come from far and near, I offer my best wishes for a happy and rewarding stay in Maiduguri, productive discussions and a pleasant experience of the city’s serenity, hospitality and welcoming environment.
