NEDC brightens Yobe towns with solar-powered streetlights

The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has launched an ambitious project to supply and install solar-powered streetlights across various towns and communities in the North East region of Nigeria.
In a significant stride toward sustainable development and enhanced security, the initiative aims to embrace renewable energy, contribute to global sustainability efforts, and address pressing security concerns in the region.
Dr Abubakar Garba Iliya, Executive Director of Administration and Finance, led an inspection tour of several project sites in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, and its environs on behalf of the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NEDC, Mohammed Goni Alkali.
According to NEDC, the inspection provided an opportunity to assess the progress and quality of the solar streetlight installations.
Speaking during the visit, Dr Iliya expressed satisfaction with the work executed so far.
He said, “I am impressed with the quality of the installations and the impact they are already having on these communities. The solar streetlights have not only improved visibility and safety at night but have also fostered a sense of security and optimism among residents,” he said.
The project, according to the NEDC, has transformed previously dark and potentially hazardous neighbourhoods into well-lit, secure, and welcoming areas.
“The illumination of these streets has not only deterred criminal activities but also created an enabling environment for socio-economic activities to thrive,” Dr Iliya noted.
“We are committed to continue extending these benefits to more communities across all local governments in Yobe State and the North East region at large.”
Residents of the benefiting communities have also praised the initiative, describing it as a game-changer for their safety and well-being.

A resident of Damaturu, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa, expressed his gratitude, saying, “The installation of these lights has brought peace of mind to us. Our streets are no longer dark and unsafe, and our children can now move around freely in the evenings.”
On his part, the state coordinator, NEDC Yobe State, Professor Ali Ibrahim Abbas, stated, “This initiative is about more than just lighting up streets; it is about lighting up lives. Providing safer and more secure environments, we are bringing hope and resilience among the people of Yobe State and the North East in general.”
With the project making strides across Yobe State and beyond, the NEDC reinforces its commitment to sustainable development, energy efficiency, and improved security.
“The solar streetlights are part of NEDC’s dedication to fostering a brighter and more prosperous future for the North East region,” Prof. Abbas concluded.
