NEDC, Yobe gov’t empower teachers with effective teaching skills (Pictures)

To ensure teachers are empowered with essential skills to discharge their professional duties, a significant five-day training workshop aimed at bolstering basic education in Yobe North has been concluded on Monday at the Umar Suleiman College of Education, Gashua.
The initiative, a collaborative effort between the North East Development Commission (NEDC) and the Yobe State Government, saw 200 teachers undergo intensive training in effective teaching and learning techniques, alongside Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Agriculture (STEMA) methodologies.
The workshop was expertly facilitated by Yalaye Nigeria Limited.
Malam Abubakar Sadiq Bulama, representing the NEDC’s Scholarship, Training, and Capacity Building Unit, underscored the Commission’s unwavering commitment to revitalising the Northeast region.
He said, “Our mandate is to rehabilitate, reconstruct, and integrate the North-East, a region that has faced challenges of low literacy and school enrollment,” he stated.
“The NEDC is dedicated to providing access to quality education by building the capacity of teachers across the zone.”
Bulama revealed that the training session is part of a larger, ambitious programme, “We have already trained 300 teachers in the first phase, and with these 200, we are now targeting 600 teachers per senatorial zone across the six Northeastern states,” he explained.
The ultimate goal, he added, is to train an impressive 100,000 teachers throughout the region. He urged the participants to fully engage with the training, emphasising its crucial role in shaping the younger generation.
Dr. Muhammed Machina, Lead Consultant for Yalaye Nigeria Limited, highlighted his company’s rigorous selection process by the NEDC.

He detailed the workshop’s structure, noting that 100 participants received specialised training in STEMA, while the remaining 100 focused on effective teaching and learning strategies.
Dr. Machina expressed confidence that the training would be “exciting, educating, and very beneficial” for the participants, who are expected to significantly impact their students.
He extended gratitude to both the NEDC and the Yobe State Government for their foresight and support.
Dr. AbdulRahman Danladi, Provost of Umar Suleiman College of Education, Gashua, emphasised the workshop’s alignment with NEDC’s mission to reform the education sector.
“This workshop is driven by the NEDC’s zeal to reposition and revitalise education, particularly by training and retraining primary and post-primary level teachers for better service delivery,” he remarked.
Dr. Danladi further elaborated on the workshop’s significance, stating, “This workshop, titled ‘Effective Teaching and Learning Techniques,’ will greatly help participants to revisit and refine their understanding of teaching.”
He stressed that teaching, like all professions, necessitates continuous training and retraining. “Teaching is more than just delivering lessons, it’s about motivating and inspiring learners, which requires careful planning, facilitation, assessing, and mentoring.”
He enjoined participants to collaborate closely with the master trainers to achieve the workshop’s objectives.
Speaking on behalf of the participants, Hajiya Falmata Muhammed, Director of Human Resource Management at the Teachers Services Board, conveyed profound appreciation to the NEDC for organising such a valuable workshop.
She urged her fellow participants to remain attentive and actively engage to maximise the benefits of the unique opportunity offered.
The successful conclusion of the workshop marks another vital step in the collective efforts to enhance educational standards and empower educators in the Northeast, laying a stronger foundation for the future of the region’s youth.
