NEMA DG defends 2025 budget before NASS Joint Committee

The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, appeared before the Joint Committee of the Senate and the House of Representatives to defend the Agency’s budget proposals for the 2025 fiscal year.

The joint session, chaired by Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan of the Senate Committee on Special Duties and Rt. Hon. Joseph Bassey of the House Committee on Emergency and Disaster Management, saw Senator Lawan presiding while Hon. Bassey served as Co-Chair.

During her presentation, the DG provided updates on the performance of NEMA’s 2024 approved budget and outlined the proposed allocations for 2025, justifying the figures based on the Agency’s strategic objectives and operational requirements.

Following her presentation, Committee members engaged in discussions on the estimates, eventually adopting a motion for further legislative action to review the allocations for disaster management.

The legislators praised NEMA’s achievements in 2024 and stressed the importance of increasing support to strengthen its capacity to manage emergencies and disasters effectively across the country.
