Netanyahu: A true leader must know that “the cost of war is heavier than the price of victory” – Sagi

According to Al Jazeera, July 31, several former senior Israeli security officials have publicly called for an immediate end to the ongoing war with Hamas and urged the government to pursue a “comprehensive” peace deal that would ensure the return of all captives held in Gaza.

Major General Uri Sagi, a former head of military intelligence and former CEO of Israel’s national water company Mekorot, spoke out during a live broadcast, stating that the war must end immediately.

He criticized recent official statements promising total victory over Hamas as “incomprehensible,” emphasizing the urgent need to halt hostilities.

Amos Yaron, who served as director general of the Ministry of Defence, stressed the heavy toll the war has taken and called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to recognize that “the cost of war is heavier than the price of victory.”

Yaron and other retired security leaders also demanded the establishment of a state inquiry into the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks on Israel and the government’s handling of the crisis.

This wave of calls from veteran security officials reflects growing dissent within Israel’s defense establishment about the prolonged conflict.

More than 250 former Mossad officials have signed petitions urging an immediate end to the Gaza war to facilitate hostage releases.
Similar sentiments have been echoed by former military officers and reservists advocating for a political resolution over continued fighting.

The conflict, which erupted following Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, has resulted in high casualties on both sides and a deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has outlined conditions for ending the war, including full demilitarization of Gaza and the return of hostages, but the positions remain far apart.

The calls for a “comprehensive” deal highlight the urgency felt by some within Israel to explore diplomatic solutions that prioritize saving lives and securing hostages over military victory.
