Netherlands advance to Euro 2024 quarterfinals with 3-0 victory over Romania
The Netherlands have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Euro 2024 Championship in Germany after a resounding 3-0 victory over Romania in the round of 16 clash on Tuesday.
Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo, on target for the third time in the European Championship, opened the scoring with a well-placed shot, while Donyell Malen netted two late goals as the Dutch showcased a vibrant performance to defeat Romania.
Following criticism from local media and fans for a shaky defensive display in their previous group match, a 3-2 loss to Austria, the Dutch team displayed composure and control to secure their spot in the Euro quarterfinals for the first time since 2008.
The lead was established in the 20th minute when Gakpo found the net with a low angled shot at goalkeeper Florin Nita’s near post, before Malen’s late brace sealed the victory, setting up a quarterfinal clash with either Austria or Turkey in Berlin on Saturday.
With a dominant possession share, the Netherlands created nearly five times more scoring opportunities in the match, emphasising their superiority.

Virgil van Dijk hit the woodwork with a header, and Gakpo saw a second effort disallowed for offside, further showcasing the Dutch team’s offensive prowess.
