New Education Policy: 18-year age limit for varsity admission abolished
The new Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has abolished the 18-year admission benchmark for tertiary institutions in the country.
This decision signals a shift in policy and may pave the way for a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s education pol.
During his inaugural press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Dr. Alausa clarified that, while changes are being made to age limits, the Federal Government stands firm on its decision to invalidate over 22,700 degree certificates obtained by Nigerians from unaccredited institutions in neighboring Togo and the Benin Republic.

Alausa emphasised the importance of practical education, stating that it is crucial in tackling Nigeria’s rising unemployment rates.
He highlighted the need for tertiary institutions to not only graduate students but also ensure they are equipped with skills that lead to job opportunities.
To further support students, the federal government plans to collaborate with private sector operators to enhance training programs and unlock the potential of young Nigerians.
Additionally, Dr. Alausa noted that universities focusing on agriculture will be encouraged to implement commercial farming initiatives as part of a strategy to address food insecurity in the nation.
