NiDCOM seeks release of 6 Nigerian tourists detained in Cape Verde

Cape Verde authorities have been urged to free six Nigerians locked up in an immigration deportation camp at the airport for allegedly not having enough funds to sustain their stay in the country.
The tourists, David James Udoh, Lily Dada, Oghenero Adaware, Sherifat Abimbola Ogundairo, and Jesutomi Aina, had travelled from Senegal to Cape Verde for a holiday when they were pulled out of the immigration line, detained, and had their phones seized.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), raised the alarm in a statement issued on Wednesday by NiDCOM’s spokesperson, Abdur-Rahman Balogun.
“We appeal to the immigration authorities in Cape Verde to please treat the tourists with respect and dignity and put them on the next immediate return flight to Dakar for onward connection back to Nigeria,” the statement reads.
She noted that one of the tourists is suffering from a medical condition and currently has no access to his prescribed medication.
Dabiri-Erewa stressed that their return is “of utmost concern” and said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the migration directorate “will follow through.”
“The families of these young Nigerians, ranging between 25 and 31 years, have been expectedly worried about the safety of their children. The matter has also been reported to the Consular and Migration Directorate in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” the statement added.
