Woman detained in Edo after throwing five-year-old child into river on seer’s advice

A woman has been apprehended by residents of Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State after allegedly throwing her five-year-old child into a river following instructions reportedly given by a self-acclaimed seer in Benin City.

The incident, which came to public attention on Tuesday through viral videos circulating on social media, has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation among Nigerians.

According to reports accompanying the videos, the woman allegedly abandoned the child after a seer claimed that the five-year-old was a python in human form.

Speaking in one of the videos, the woman reportedly said she had been unable to conceive another child since giving birth to the five-year-old. She further explained that the child had been unable to walk since birth, a situation that prompted her to seek spiritual intervention.

According to her account, a self-acclaimed seer in Benin City allegedly told her that the child was responsible for her inability to have more children.

“The seer told me that the child was a python and that if I did not get rid of the child, I would either continue giving birth to children with the same condition or never conceive again,” she reportedly said.

The revelation has triggered public anger, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the influence of unverified spiritual claims and harmful superstitious beliefs on vulnerable individuals.

The condition of the child and details of any ongoing police investigation were not immediately available as of the time of filing this report.
