Nigeria Police refute Amnesty International’s protest death claims, release official record

The Nigeria Police Force has contested a report by Amnesty International alleging that 13 individuals have died as a result of the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests.

In an official press release, the police clarified the number of fatalities, stating that only seven deaths have been recorded over the first two days of the nationwide protests. According to their records:

– Four individuals lost their lives in Borno State due to a terrorist attack by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP elements.
– Two civilians were killed when an unregistered car ran into protesters.
– One looter was killed in Kebbi State.

The police also noted various incidents of armed robbery, arson, and property destruction during the protests. They reported the arrest of 681 individuals for criminal activities, with dangerous weapons, including two AK-47 rifles, being recovered. The statement emphasized that those arrested were involved in criminal activities and not merely participating in the protests.

Nine police officers sustained injuries from attacks by protesters, with one officer in critical condition. The police urged law-abiding citizens to withdraw from the protests, which have escalated into violence, and reaffirmed their commitment to providing accurate information and ensuring public safety during these challenging times.
