Nigeria – Siemens Power Deal: FGN confirms arrival of transformers

Story from Abah ADAH, Abuja

The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN), has acknowledged the arrival of some Siemens transformers in the country based on the agreement entered into by the German power firm with it.

Minister of Power, Abubakar Aliyu, who made the confirmation at the closing session of the 5th National Council on Power (NACOP) in Abuja said the transformers are already arriving.

Sometime around July, the federal government said the mega transformers it ordered under the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) had successfully undergone a factory acceptance test at Siemens’ transformers factory in Trento, Italy, adding that the first batch of the transformers was expected to arrive in Nigeria in September, 2022.

The Minister explained that based on the pact between the Federal Government and Siemens, an order was placed for the purchase of the 10 morbid power transformers and 10 mobile substations.

“Through the agreement with Siemens, orders had been made for the purchase of 10 morbid power transformers and 10 mobile substations. The 10 morbid power transformers to be situated across the country have started arriving,” the minister stated.

He stated that the government-to-government collaboration between Nigeria and Germany resulted in a loan agreement for the purchase of the equipment.

Aliyu said the loan was provided on concessionary terms through Siemens Company, adding that the fund was acquired to rehabilitate the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) and the value chain in the sector, adding that the government had also developed the National Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Policy with the accompanying Vision 30:30:30.

On his part, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Muhammad Bello, represented by the executive secretary, Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Shehu Ahmad, said: “The importance of the electricity value chain to the socio-economic development of Nigeria calls for synergy between operators and players within them.”
