Nomination list for vacancies in the Supreme Court false – NJC

The National Judicial Council (NJC) has officially distanced itself from recent claims circulating on social media that it received a nomination list for vacancies in the Supreme Court from the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC).

Soji Oye, the Director of Information at the NJC, clarified the situation, stating that at no point did he discuss the nomination of justices from the FJSC with anyone.

Oye emphasized that reports on such matters are always released through official press statements from the Council, cautioning against the dissemination of unverified reports regarding the nomination process to fill vacancies on the bench, particularly through social media.

Previously, there were reports suggesting that the FJSC had submitted a list of 22 nominees for the NJC’s consideration to fill vacancies in the apex court, with regional distribution of candidates across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.

This nomination purportedly aimed to address the vacant positions in the Supreme Court, following concerns that it was operating below its constitutional strength of 21 Justices due to retirements and deaths.

Oye firmly advised the media, especially social media platforms, to ensure they obtain information from credible sources to avoid spreading misinformation to the public.
