Terrorists kill two, kidnap 30 in an attack on Kogi community

Panic gripped residents of Ayegunle Bunu in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State after armed bandits launched a deadly attack on the community in the early hours of Monday, killing two people and abducting 30 others.

The attack, which occurred around 2:25 a.m. on June 1, 2026, saw heavily armed assailants invade the community, abducting residents and travelers along the route.

While initial reports indicated that one person had been killed and another injured, the Kogi State Police Command later confirmed that two persons lost their lives during the incident.

Community sources revealed that among those kidnapped were two residents of Ayegunle Bunu—a man and a woman—while the remaining victims were passengers travelling in a commercial vehicle intercepted by the attackers.

Confirming the attack, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Afusat Oyiza Saliu, disclosed that a total of 30 persons were abducted, including 26 men and four women.

According to her, the deceased were identified as 22-year-old Abdullahi Hashimu from Igabi Local Government Area, who was a passenger in one of the intercepted vehicles, and 65-year-old Chief James Obayomi, one of the residents taken from Ayegunle village during the raid.

Saliu stated that security agencies have launched operations aimed at rescuing the abducted victims and tracking down those responsible for the attack.

Residents said efforts were still ongoing to determine the full extent of the incident and verify whether additional persons were affected.

The latest attack has renewed concerns over worsening insecurity along major highways and rural communities in Kogi State, where incidents of kidnapping and armed attacks have become increasingly frequent.
