Why police operatives stormed NLC complex in Abuja – Spokesman

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has confirmed that it conducted a raid on the second floor of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Complex in Abuja on August 7, 2024.

According to Force spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi, the raid was aimed at recovering incriminating documents linked to an international suspect accused of threatening Nigeria’s democracy.

Adejobi, stated on Monday, that the raid was not targeted at the NLC headquarters on the 10th floor but rather at an office used by the suspect on the second floor.

He emphasized that the police had established a landlord-tenant relationship between the NLC and the suspect, whose syndicate members have been arrested.

The police recovered evidence during the raid, which Adejobi described as proof of the suspect’s subversive activities.

He hinted that the suspect, who claims multiple foreign identities, including being Russian and British, travels frequently out of Nigeria.

Adejobi denied any connection between the raid and the recent #EndBadGovernance protests, stating that the police were focused on preventing threats to national security.

He assured that the NLC would be involved in the probe and that a forensic investigation was underway. The raid has been met with condemnation from local and international rights groups, including Amnesty International.

However, Adejobi maintained that the police were acting within their mandate to protect Nigeria’s democracy and common heritage.
