NPFL slams ₦4.7m fine on Plateau Utd over violent behaviour of fans
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has fined Plateau United ₦4.7m and handed the club a three-point deduction over crowd violence in the side’s match against Rangers.
Some players and officials of Enugu Rangers were injured in an attack by suspected fans of Plateau United with viral videos and photos on social media showing some of them bleeding.
The game ended goalless. But following the incident, the NPFL said the attack in the November 11 game was a breach of its rules.
“Plateau Utd failed to provide adequate & effective security, resulting in the attacks on the match officials & the visiting team, Rangers International. Supporters of Plateau Utd also threw objects towards the field of play leading to the injury of one of the match officials.
“The Plateau club also failed to ensure the proper conduct of their supporters in the match against Rangers. After the match, supporters of Plateau Utd attacked one of the match officials, an act capable of bringing the game to disrepute.

“Plateau Utd shall have 3 points & 3 goals deducted from their accrued points & goals for assaulting a match official. Plateau Utd will pay a fine of N1 million each for failing to provide adequate & effective security as well as for throwing objects towards the field of play, totalling N2 million.
“Plateau Utd will further pay N1 million each for failing to ensure proper conduct of their supporters & misconduct capable of bringing the game to disrepute, totalling another N2 million.
“Plateau Utd will pay another fine of N500,000, being compensation of N250,000 each for the assaulted match official (Zakari Aminu) & Rangers player, Daniel Onyia.
“Plateau Utd shall underwrite the cost of repairing the damaged team bus of Rangers & other verifiable loss/damage incurred during the incident.
“Plateau Utd will play their next 3 home matches behind closed doors at their New Jos Stadium ground.
“The Plateau club have 48 hours from the date of notice to appeal these sanctions,” the statement said.
