Blessing Bassey, 27, a nursing mother and her baby have been held in a hospital, sleeping on the floor in one of the wards of Mojol Hospital, Church Street, Shasha area, Lagos State for seven months for failure to pay N95,000 balance of hospital bill.
The report says that the hospital management mandated nurses and doctors to ensure that Blessing and her infant did not leave the hospital premises until she completes her debt.
Blessing, an indigene of Cross River State explained that her husband who is a mechanic has been unable to raise the balance after he tried to do one or two jobs.
She recounts that sometime in March 2020, she was unconscious, and neighbours rushed her to the hospital where she registered but they were unable to perform a cesarean section on her due to their deficiency in equipment and had her referred to Mojol Hospital.
“I was seven months pregnant at that time. I collapsed and was rushed to the hospital, I registered but they did not have the equipment for a cesarean section, so I was referred to Mojol Hospital.
“I was rushed to the hospital that same night and a CS was performed to save my life and the baby.
“Some days after the CS was done, I was told that our bill was N300,000; we paid N100,000 out of it.
“After paying, the owner of the hospital said the bill was N350,000. One of our neighbours came to beg to reduce the money, and she reduced it to N250,000.
“We were able to pay a total of N155,000 and begged her to allow me to go and work so we could pay the balance by instalments, but she refused. I have been in the hospital since then.
