Barber bags 2 years imprisonment for selling Cannabis Sativa to buy working equipment
Justice Nkeonye Maha of the Federal High Court, Ibadan, has sentenced a barber, Jamiu Badmus, to two years in the correctional centre for peddling 220g of Cannabis Sativa.
Delivering judgment, Maha said that her decision to convict Badmus arose from his guilty plea and the overwhelming evidence tendered against him by the prosecution.
She added that the convict was a first-time offender, who during trial showed remorse, and had promised to turn a new leaf.
“Badmus is hereby sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and the sentence starts from the date of his arrest.
“The N143,850 proceeds he realised from the sale of Cannabis are forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
“The weed exhibit found in his possession shall be destroyed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA),” Maha held.
Shortly before the judgment, the defence counsel, Mr Femi Oyinloye, prayed the court to show mercy on his client, who is an orphan and his family’s breadwinner.
Oyinloye explained that the convict was lured into the business by one Baba Sunday who told him that drug peddling was lucrative.
The defence counsel further stated that Badmus was a trained barber and was looking for money to buy his barbing equipment before venturing into the illicit business.
The Prosecutor, Mrs R.O. Ige had earlier informed the court that the convict committed the crime on Nov. 12, 2025, at Apata area of Ibadan, Oyo State.
Ige said that concerned Nigerians had tipped off operatives of the NDLEA that Badmus was involved in the peddling of illicit drugs.
She stated that the operatives subsequently apprehended the convict in possession of a bag containing 220g of Cannabis Sativa.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of section 11(C ) of the NDLEA Act Cap N30 Law of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
