Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, resigns ahead of 2027 elections
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has tendered his resignation from the position.
Alkasim Abdulkadir, special adviser to the special assistant on media and communications strategy to Tuggar, announced the minister’s resignation in a statement issued on Monday.
Tuggar is expected to join the race for the Bauchi State governorship in the 2027 elections.
Abdulkadir stated that Tuggar had submitted his resignation letter to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) in accordance with the recent directive of President Bola Tinubu.
Tuggar was quoted as saying he appreciated Tinubu for the opportunity given to him to serve the country.
“Ambassador Tuggar also expressed his sincere appreciation to the management and staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as members of the diplomatic community, for their cooperation and support throughout his tenure,” the statement reads.
“During his time in office, the Minister demonstrated strong leadership and commitment to advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives.
“His tenure was marked by several notable achievements, advancing people-centred diplomacy through humanitarian evacuations, scholarship facilitation, and sustained support for Nigerians abroad, enhancing diaspora engagement, including the development of a structured Nigerians-in-Diaspora database to deepen national participation.
“It was also a time of deepening bilateral and multilateral relations through strategic engagements with key traditional partners and regional alliances especially in the global south.
“His tenure will be remembered for promoting regional and security cooperation and the formation of the Regional Partnership for democracy.
“Driving economic diplomacy by positioning Nigeria as an attractive destination for foreign investment, particularly in the energy sector.”
Recently, Tinubu directed all political appointees seeking to contest elective positions in 2027 to resign on or before March 31, 2026.
