Troops arrest five in Borno as stray bullet kills 15-yr-old girl
Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have arrested five individuals following a tragic incident in Borno State where a stray bullet claimed the life of a 15-year-old girl in the Gomari area of Maiduguri.
The development was confirmed in a statement by the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force (North East), Sani Uba, who disclosed that the arrests were made in connection with the unauthorised discharge of firearms.
According to the statement, the incident occurred around 2:00 p.m. on April 4, 2026, during a wedding celebration at Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Teachers Staff Quarters. Vigilantes, later identified as members of an escort team attached to a local government chairman, allegedly fired shots into the air during the event.
The celebratory gunfire turned deadly when a stray bullet struck and killed the teenage girl.
Acting swiftly, troops in collaboration with the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) tracked down and arrested five suspects linked to the incident. The suspects — Muhammad Husaini (28), Abba Jiddu (25), Abba Kolo Mohammed (20), Ali Adam (20), and Nura Mohammed (18) — are currently in custody and will be handed over for further investigation and prosecution.
The Theatre Command condemned the act, describing it as reckless, unauthorised and a serious breach of firearm regulations. It stressed that the CJTF operates strictly as a support group and is not permitted to use firearms indiscriminately, especially in civilian settings.
Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation in collaboration with the Borno State Government, including the Office of the Senior Adviser on Security, to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure accountability.
