On renaming of University of Abuja after General Yakubu Gowon by Federal Executive Council (FEC) today, by Abubakar M Kareto
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has renamed the University of Abuja in honor of Yakubu Gowon. I have profound respect for General Yakubu Gowon, who is undoubtedly one of our nation’s greatest leaders. Nevertheless, I am firmly against the renaming of the University of Abuja, not only after General Gowon but also after any other individual. We should acknowledge the contributions of individuals to our nation’s development through alternative means. The University of Abuja, as a premier institution in our capital city, should retain its original name to promote our capital city globally.
There are numerous countries that retain the names of their prestigious universities, which have established a global reputation. Universities are esteemed brands, and their names remain unchanged. Examples include the University of Cape Town, University of Ghana, University of Nairobi, University of Cairo, and University of KwaZulu-Natal, as well as the University of Malaya, University of London, and the University of Science and Technology. This does not imply that these countries lack notable individuals or illustrious figures.

Certain national brands, including universities, are exempt from interference by countries. They serve multiple purposes, including educational, cultural, and tourism sustainability.
It is lamentable that the political culture of renaming tertiary institutions in honor of politicians persists. This trend is regrettably gaining traction. The decision to rename the University of Abuja as Yakubu Gowon University will undoubtedly perplex foreign employers and academic institutions, ultimately affecting university graduates who will continue to hold certificates bearing the names of institutions that no longer exist.
Does the Federal Executive Council have the constitutional authority to rename a university? I remember Professor Olayide Abass, the national president of the University of Lagos Alumni Association, criticizing the then President Jonathan’s decision to rename the University of Lagos in honor of the late Moshood Abiola, pointing out that the university’s governing council and senate were not consulted before the change was made. The group rejected the decision, stressing that only the National Assembly has the power to effect such a change.
