On the NFF choice of Eric Chelle as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles, by Abubakar M. Kareto
Why is there so much debate surrounding the NFF’s decision to appoint Eric, a Malian, as the head coach of the Super Eagles? Is it merely because he is African?
I, for one, am comfortable with Eric Chelle’s appointment as coach. Mali’s impressive performance at the last AFCON in Ivory Coast, under his guidance, is noteworthy, especially considering they lacked the quality players that the Super Eagles boast.

Let’s focus on competence rather than nationality when engaging in disputes, as any country is capable of producing exceptional talent. After all, Amunike and Keshi successfully coached Tanzania and Togo, respectively. Technical expertise and capability are essential skills that can only be acquired through proper training and knowledge, regardless of one’s country of origin. Prejudice has no place in achieving excellence.
It is time for us to start leveraging African coaches, as demonstrated by the African coach who won the last AFCON, despite the presence of many foreign coaches in the tournament.
To prove a point, the coach of Ivory Coast, an Ivorian, neutralized José Peseiro from Portugal, who has coached Porto, Sporting CP, and was a former assistant coach at Real Madrid, to achieve a victory in the finals with a better team. Additionally, James Kwesi Appiah, a Ghanaian tactician, recently led Sudan to qualification under difficult circumstances.
I am optimistic that the Super Eagles will thrive under Eric Chelle’s leadership.
