One dead as Ngige’s convoy comes under attack in Anambra

Story by Susan Mbamah

A woman was killed and two others injured on Wednesday when gunmen ambushed a vehicle in the convoy of former Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, along the Nkpor-Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

According to reports, Ngige was not in the convoy at the time of the attack, but his pilot car and security team were caught in the ambush.

Witnesses said the assailants, who appeared in military and police uniforms, suddenly opened fire on the convoy. A woman identified as a passer-by, who reportedly brought out her phone to record the incident, was shot dead instantly.

A police officer attached to the convoy, who served as the escort leader, sustained gunshot injuries. His rifle and uniform were allegedly taken away by the attackers. Another civilian, a shop owner who rushed to the scene, was also hit by a stray bullet.

Both injured victims were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The gunmen reportedly fled the scene with a white Mercedes-Benz SUV snatched during the attack. Police authorities later confirmed that the stolen vehicle had been recovered, and a manhunt for the attackers has been launched across the state.
