Ooni’s ex-wife arrested, 35 minors confirmed dead in Ibadan stampede

A tragic stampede at a funfair held at Islamic High School in Orita Bashorun, Ibadan, has led to the confirmed deaths of 35 minors.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has sparked widespread outrage, including from Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who pledged to investigate the circumstances and hold those responsible accountable. Governor Makinde also expressed his condolences to the grieving parents of the victims.

The following day, the Oyo State Police Command announced the arrest of seven individuals connected to the disaster. Among those taken into custody are Naomi Silekunola, the ex-queen of the Ooni of Ife, who is reportedly the primary sponsor of the event; Fasasi Abdulahi, the Principal of Islamic High School; and five others.

According to police spokesperson Adewale Osifeso, the arrested individuals are Naomi Silekunola (event sponsor), Fasasi Abdulahi (school principal), Genesis Christopher, Tanimowo Moruf, Anisolaja Olabode, Idowu Ibrahim, and Abiola Oluwatimilehin.

Osifeso also confirmed that six people are critically injured and receiving medical treatment.

The case has been handed over to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, with the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the investigation.

Authorities have reassured the public that they will increase police patrols to maintain security and prevent any exploitation of the tragedy.
