Over 20 villagers in Zamfara drown while running away from bandits

More than 20 villagers from Kali, a community in Gumi local government area of Zamfara State, have tragically drowned while attempting to escape bandits’ attack.

Speaking on the incident, a resident who for pleaded anonymity said bandits attacked the community at about 1:00 pm on 4th August 2024 with deadly weapons and the villagers were trying to run for safety.

He said, “The bandits were seen moving towards Kalli village on motorcycles with sophisticated weapons to attack the community, which forced the villagers to flee for their safety.”

According to him, bandits are well known for terrorising communities of Kwammaka, Kwammaka Jibi, Kwammaka Mai Katsina, Kallin and Kazura villages, all in Gummi local government area, and in a bid to flee to safety, the villagers overloaded the boat, which capsized along Birnin Magaji River, which led to the death of 20 passengers.

He explained that five corpses were recovered at Falale River, four at Birnin Magaji River, while three were also recovered at Gadar Gummi River.
