Over 200 houses in Kebbi state destroyed in severe flooding

A devastating flood has struck the Argungu Emirate in Kebbi State, Nigeria, resulting in the destruction of over 200 houses and displacing numerous residents.

The disaster followed intense rainfall on Saturday and Sunday, impacting villages including Bayawa, Tiggi, Fakon Sarki Settlement, and Karda Area in Argungu town.

The severe flooding has left many residents homeless, with several seeking refuge in local schools. Residents from Bayawa village have taken shelter at Bayawa Secondary School, while those from Fakon Sarki have been relocated to Magajin Rafi Model Primary School. The displaced residents of Tiggi village are also being housed at their local secondary school.

Kebbi State’s Deputy Governor, Umar Tafida, has visited the affected areas to assess the situation and provide initial support. He has directed an assessment of the damaged properties, instructed the compilation of a list of victims, and ordered the evacuation of affected individuals to safer locations.

In response to the crisis, Tafida has allocated N5 million to each of the affected villages—Bayawa, Tiggi, and Fakon Sarki—as initial aid and has provided an additional N1 million for the purchase of food and drinks for the displaced residents. He has pledged to forward a report to the state governor, Nasir Idris, to seek further assistance from both state and federal governments.
