The Presidential Committee on the North East Initiative PCNI in collaboration with the Centre for Crisis Communication (CCC) has organized a training workshop in Maiduguri, Borno State. The theme of the training workshop is “Conflict sensitive communication for the media and information officers of security and response agencies in the North East”.
The training drew participants from the Army, Airforce, DSS, Police, Immigration Service, Prisons, Civilian JTF, NOA, NUJ amongst several others.
In his address at the event the Vice Chairman of the PCNI, Tijjani Musa Tumsah appealed to media practitioners to prioritize national cohesion and survival. He further reminded Response and Security Information Officers that only committed and consistent collaboration will defeat the Boko Haram ideology. He ended his address by urging the
participants to apply the lessons of the workshop in preventing and countering violent extremism.
In his remarks, the Executive Secretary of the CCC, said the most important objective of the workshop has been achieved which is building cohesion amongst journalists and security agencies in not only managing perceptions but in ensuring factual reporting of events on both sides of the divide.
Among the resource persons were the former Director, Public Relations and Information Nigerian Airforce and the former Director Defence Information Major General Chris Olukolade (rtd). Regarding the choice of the Centre for Crisis Communication, the Head Media and Communication of the PCNI Alkasim Abdulkadir said the Centre was chosen as facilitators because they offer a holistic, cohesive and collaborative mechanism in crisis information management and communication, as this enables stakeholders to leverage on effective crisis communication and mediation. The training is one of PCNI’s High Impact programs for restoring media assets and building the capacity of the North East’s Media.
