PDP Crisis Deepens: Anti-Damagum faction eyes merger with ‘Mega Party’
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing a significant crisis as elements opposed to the leadership of acting National Chairman, Ambassador Illyasu Damagum, intensify plans to exit the party. Insiders reveal that a proposed merger with other opposition groups to form a “Mega Party” is in advanced stages.
Ambassador Illyasu Damagum, who assumed leadership in March 2024 following the resignation of Senator Iyorchia Ayu, has been at the centre of internal dissent. Critics, particularly from the North Central zone, have demanded that the chairmanship be handed to a representative from their region. Despite interventions by the National Executive Committee (NEC), Damagum has held on to his position, further alienating certain party leaders.
A PDP insider, speaking anonymously, stated:
“The PDP is now like a basket holding water – it’s empty. Most influential members have left, leaving the party as a mere shadow of its former self.”
Sources indicate that disenchanted PDP leaders are in discussions with other opposition forces to form a united political platform. Notable players include the Social Democratic Party (SDP), led by former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai, the Labour Party’s Obedient Movement, and factions of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
“This is not just an idea; the merger plans are concrete. Meetings have been held, and agreements are being finalised,” said a source privy to the talks.

The alliance is expected to include members of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet, reportedly led by ex-Attorney General Abubakar Malami, who is said to be bridging discussions between the Atiku Abubakar camp, Peter Obi’s Labour Party faction, and other key figures.
The ongoing defections and internal wrangling have weakened the PDP’s organisational structure. Many governors previously elected on the party’s platform have left, further diminishing its influence.
Another insider remarked:
“What’s left of the PDP are individuals clinging on for personal gain, not for the collective interest of the party. The merger talks are the final nail in the coffin.”
The new coalition is expected to take shape by March 2025, with talks focusing on a unified platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general elections. The coalition may take the form of a formal merger, alliance, or strategic coalition, depending on the outcome of ongoing discussions.
While Damagum’s supporters maintain that his leadership has been instrumental in holding the PDP together during challenging times, critics argue that his tenure has caused more harm than good. The faction opposing Damagum accuses him of prioritising personal interests over party unity.
