PDP expels Wike, Fayose, Anyanwu, others at Ibadan convention

Story by Okafor VivianĀ

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday expelled several prominent members including Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, and former National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu during its national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The motion for the expulsion was moved on the convention floor by former National Vice Chairman (South), Chief Olabode George, and promptly seconded by Bauchi State PDP Chairman, Hon. Samaila Burga.

The decision follows weeks of internal turmoil marked by court cases, factional hostilities, and attempts by the Wike-led bloc to stop the convention from holding. Although Wike’s loyalists sought a court order to halt the gathering, the PDP secured a favourable judgment from an Oyo State High Court, clearing the party to proceed.

Despite the ruling, the faction rejected the Ibadan convention as invalid. Mao Ohuabunwa, Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) in the Wike-aligned faction, dismissed the exercise as lacking legal status, insisting their National Working Committee (NWC) was committed to obeying court directives.

ā€œIbadan is a public place; people can go there for anything but not for convention,ā€ Ohuabunwa said, describing the event as a ā€œjamboree.ā€ He also noted that Senator Anyanwu had issued a circular announcing the postponement of the convention.

The faction’s acting National Chairman, Abdulrahman Muhammad, urged party delegates nationwide to boycott the Ibadan gathering, arguing that a lawful convention would be held at the appropriate time. He emphasized that their camp remained focused on rebuilding the PDP into a united and formidable opposition.

Reacting to the situation, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike praised his supporters for ā€œdefending the PDPā€ amid the internal conflict. He vowed to remain steadfast.

ā€œI will continue to support you. I won’t betray you,ā€ Wike told his loyalists.
