University of Abuja expels 28 students for cultism, drug offences
The University of Abuja (UniAbuja) has expelled 28 students over alleged involvement in cult-related activities and drug offences, reinforcing the institution’s zero-tolerance stance on indiscipline and criminal behavior.
The decision followed recommendations from the university’s disciplinary committee after investigations into reported cases of secret cult membership, drug possession, and abuse within the campus community.
University authorities stated that the affected students were found culpable after due process was observed.
In a statement issued by the management, the institution emphasized its commitment to maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment for students and staff. “The University of Abuja will not condone any act that threatens the peace, safety, and academic integrity of our community,” the statement read.
The management warned that cultism and drug-related activities remain serious violations of university regulations and Nigerian law, adding that security agencies would continue to collaborate with the school to curb criminal activities on campus.
Education stakeholders have lauded the move, describing it as a strong message to students engaging in unlawful behavior. They noted that decisive disciplinary measures are necessary to safeguard academic institutions from violence and social vices.
Meanwhile, the university urged parents and guardians to support efforts aimed at promoting moral discipline and positive values among students, stressing that academic excellence must go hand in hand with responsible conduct.
