Story from Ahmad SAKA,  Bauchi

The Bauchi State Government has appealed to the Nigerian Government to come to their aid in tackling the menace of perennial flooding in parts of the state, leading to loss of lives and property.

The state Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, made the appeal on Saturday when he visited Ningi, the headquarters of Ningi Local Government Area of the state, for an on-the-spot assessment of the damages caused by flooding in the area on Friday.

Heavy rainfall between Thursday night and Friday morning led to flooding in the area, leading to the collapse of the Gadan Maiwa, rafin malka with two persons feared to have lost their lives in the flooding. Over 20 houses and farmlands in the area were submerged and destroyed.

The heavy downpour was said to have cut off a bridge linking Bauchi to Kano federal highway which left travellers stranded on the road on Friday.

According to the governor, not less than N10 billion would be needed to fix drainages in the state with a view to preventing a recurrence as well as fix the damages caused by the heavy downpour which led to the flooding.

“We have challenges in almost all parts of the state as a result of heavy rain. The state government will do all drainages in all the local government areas in the state, while the Nigerian Government should do all those in the town,” the Governor said.

He, therefore, called on the Nigerian Government to as a matter of urgency to come to the assistance of the state in tackling floods and promised to provide assistance for victims of floodings in the area.

Governor Mohammed called on the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to quickly mobilise in order to repair the damages done on federal roads in the state by heavy rainfalls, listing such roads in Ningi, Nabardo, Maiduguri-Soro, Gombe-Kirfi, among others.
