Plateau, Borno Attacks: Nigeria’s security system has collapsed under Tinubu – Atiku
Former Vice President and 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has strongly criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration over the resurgence of deadly attacks in Plateau State, blaming the government for what he called a “collapse” of Nigeria’s security system.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Atiku mourned the deaths of at more than 50 people killed in Zike community, Bassa LGA, just days after similar violence in Bokkos.
He described the incidents as a tragic sign of deteriorating national security under Tinubu’s watch.
“It is regrettable and entirely unacceptable that these Nigerians had to lose their lives as a result of the incompetence of the Tinubu-led administration,” Atiku stated.
“The protection of lives and property is the primary responsibility of any government. Unfortunately, President Tinubu has failed these citizens.”

The former VP also highlighted escalating violence in Borno State, referencing concerns raised by Governor Babagana Zulum and the Shehu of Borno about rising casualties and loss of communities to insurgents.
Atiku criticised the federal government’s inability to prosecute terrorists, pointing out that some suspects arrested since 2016 remain untried.
He urged the Attorney General to prioritise terrorism-related cases and called for the creation of special courts to fast-track justice.
He further condemned cross-border incursions by armed groups, calling it a “national disgrace,” and appealed to the National Assembly to empower state security outfits with modern arms.

“The people cannot continue to pay the price for government failures,” Atiku said, adding that reactive condemnations are not enough, and that what Nigeria needs is decisive, preventive action.
While praising the dedication of security forces, he stressed that they need more than words—they need real support. He also urged local communities to cooperate with authorities and avoid aiding armed groups.
“May the souls of the departed rest in peace. We owe them justice, and we owe Nigeria a safer future,” he concluded.
