Police debunk ‘mass rape’ claims at Federal University Lafia

The Nasarawa State Police Command has strongly denied widespread social media reports that more than 30 female students at the Federal University, Lafia, were raped during a recent security breach.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Command spokesperson DSP Ramhan Nansel called the claims “completely false,” stating that a thorough investigation found no evidence to support the allegations.

“That story is completely false,” Nansel said. “There is no record or credible testimony indicating that bandits entered the university and raped over 30 female students. Our inquiries with school officials and students contradict that narrative.”

He explained that police spoke with key university staff, including the Chief Security Officer and Information Officer, as well as several students.

All of them confirmed that no such incident had been reported. “If such an incident had occurred, it wouldn’t be hidden,” he added. “Students would have spoken up, and the school authorities would have raised the alarm. But none of that happened.”

Nansel did confirm that a robbery occurred in the student village on July 27. During the incident, a female student, Jennifer, reported that her phone, power bank, and handbag were stolen. A male student was also injured while trying to escape the attackers.

“There was indeed a case of robbery, not sexual assault,” Nansel stated. “No report of rape was made, and no evidence has surfaced to suggest otherwise. Alleging that 30 female students were raped is not only inaccurate but also irresponsible.”

He urged the public to stop spreading unverified information that could cause fear and panic, and reaffirmed the police’s commitment to protecting students and residents in the area.
