The Yobe State Police Commissioner, Abdulmalik Sunumani, has said that a 14-year old boy was “accidentally shot dead” by a policeman at the Damaturu metropolis checkpoint along Maiduguri road.
Confirming the incident on Thursday to journalists in Damaturu, Sunumani described it as an unfortunate incident. He said the driver of the vehicle was trying to beat a police checkpoint with a smuggled Mercedes Benz car, prompting one of the policemen on duty to open fire on the vehicle which was carrying the boy and his mother.
Sunumani further disclosed that the driver picked the woman with her son in Kano on his way from Lagos to Maiduguri, adding that investigation into the matter is still ongoing.
On how the boy was shot, Sunumani said: “What happened was an unfortunate incident. I can tell you that it really happened this Thursday.
“From what my men told me, they got information from the last check point that an unmarked Mercedes Benz car was being driven without any registration number.
“When the car arrived at the Damaturu checkpoint, he didn’t stop and one of my men opened fire at the vehicle and a bullet hit the boy who was rushed to the hospital but later died. We have not concluded investigation but this is how much I can tell you on today’s incident,” he said.
It was learnt that the mother of the teenager was transporting three bags of kola nuts to Maiduguri for sale.
