Police probe officer over extortion, recover ₦4m for victim

The Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, has launched a disciplinary investigation into an Inspector accused of extortion and human rights violations.

The probe began after a petition was posted on social media detailing the officer’s alleged misconduct.

In a quick response, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of FCID Annex, Margaret Ochalla, instructed the CP X-Squad to look into the matter. The investigation led to the arrest of both the Inspector and a Point of Sale (POS) agent involved in the transaction.

During questioning, the Inspector admitted that the victim had been arrested after local residents accused him of community terrorising. Police sources said the victim later confessed to identity theft and was granted bail pending further investigation.

The POS operator confessed that the victim had initially withdrawn ₦4 million cash from her but later returned and deposited the same amount with her without providing a reason.

AIG Ochalla confirmed that the full ₦4 million has been recovered and returned to the victim. She stated that the Inspector is currently undergoing an Orderly Room Trial.

Reiterating the police force’s dedication to professionalism and accountability, Ochalla urged the public to continue reporting misconduct, assuring that officers who break the law will face consequences.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer for FCID Annex, ASP Mayegun Aminat, confirmed the development, emphasising that the Nigeria Police Force has zero tolerance for corruption and is committed to delivering justice without compromise.
