Police raid PDP headquarters as factional secretaries return

On Monday, police officers were stationed at the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as both the contested National Secretary, Samuel Anyawu, and Ude Okoye, whom the Court of Appeal has recognized as the legitimate National Secretary, were set to resume their duties.

Reporters on ground reported that the presence of both secretaries at the secretariat might lead to some dramatic developments. Both Anyawu and Okoye are claiming the position of National Secretary.

There is a visible, albeit small, police presence at the PDP headquarters, along with supporters of both Anyawu and Okoye. Amidst the protests, Anyawu drove into the premises, heading straight to his office, where he was greeted with cheers from his supporters.

Once inside his office, Anyawu called for prayers and briefly answered questions from journalists. Regarding the court ruling, he stated that the matter was being appealed and had been taken to the Supreme Court.

When asked about the party’s position last week, when it acknowledged Okoye as National Secretary, Anyawu dismissed the national publicity secretary’s statement as a personal opinion.

The dispute began when Anyawu contested the Imo State governorship election, which he lost to the incumbent. Upon his return to the party, Okoye, who had temporarily held the position of National Secretary during Anyawu’s absence, challenged Anyawu’s right to reclaim the office.

The courts ruled in Okoye’s favor, and the PDP’s National Working Committee recognized Okoye as the legitimate National Secretary, emphasizing the party’s respect for the Court of Appeal’s decision.
