Police smash arms syndicate in Delta, recover cache of ammunition

The Delta State Police Command has dismantled a suspected arms syndicate in Warri, arresting a major arms dealer, his female accomplice, and recovering a large quantity of live ammunition.
Police spokesperson, Bright Edafe, confirmed the development in a statement on Saturday, noting that the breakthrough followed credible intelligence provided by the Force Technical Intelligence Unit, Abuja.
According to Edafe, operatives of the Commissioner of Police Special Assignment Team, led by Julius Robinson, first apprehended a female suspect, Jamila Abubakar, at Conoil Filling Station along the Warri–Patani Road, Effurun.

“During the search, officers discovered ₦550,000 suspected to be proceeds from illicit arms transactions, neatly concealed in her bag,” he stated.
Her confession reportedly led to a follow-up operation that uncovered a major illegal arms supply network. Acting on her information, operatives raided the Niger-Cat area of Warri on October 22, 2025, where they arrested Ahmed Ibrahim (31), a notorious arms dealer from Ekpan in Uvwie Local Government Area.
A search of the premises led to the recovery of 115 rounds of 7.63mm AK-47 live ammunition, 220 rounds of SMG rifle ammunition, and 32 live cartridges.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Ibrahim has long been on the police watchlist for supplying weapons to bandit groups in northern Nigeria. He is also suspected to have links to several high-profile crimes, including the kidnapping and killing of Ogheneovo Onemu in Ughelli North Local Government Area in May 2024, despite a ₦4 million ransom payment.
Delta State Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, commended the operatives for their diligence, describing the arrests as “a clear demonstration of the command’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks and halting the flow of illegal arms.”

Abaniwonda assured the public that the command remains resolute in protecting lives and property while ensuring that offenders face the full weight of the law.
