Presidency dismisses claims as Atiku, Obi clash with FG Over tax law changes

The Presidency has pushed back against allegations of unlawful alterations to Nigeria’s tax laws, following criticism from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Atiku and Obi had raised concerns over what they described as questionable amendments to existing tax regulations, warning that the changes could worsen the economic burden on Nigerians and undermine transparency in governance.
Responding, the Presidency dismissed the claims, insisting that all tax law adjustments were carried out through due process and in line with constitutional provisions. It maintained that the reforms are part of broader efforts to strengthen revenue generation, improve fiscal discipline, and stabilize the economy.

Government officials accused critics of politicising policy decisions, urging Nigerians to focus on the long-term benefits of the reforms rather than what they termed “misleading narratives.”
The disagreement has intensified public debate over tax reforms, as economists, lawmakers, and civil society groups continue to scrutinize the impact of the changes on businesses and ordinary citizens.
