Prices of food items surge in Niger market amidst rising inflation, hardship

Prices of essential food items on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at Kure Ultra Modern Market in Minna, Niger State, showed rice selling at ₦35,000 per bag and ₦1,800 per mudu.
Melon was ₦60,000 per bag and ₦1,100 per mudu. While Millet was sold at ₦50,000 per bag and ₦700 per mudu.
Guinea corn cost ₦48,000 per bag and ₦800 per mudu. Soya beans is ₦85,000 per bag and ₦1,500 per mudu. Beans sold at ₦80,000 per bag and ₦2,100 per mudu.
Maize goes for ₦47,000 per bag and ₦1,000 per mudu. Garri was ₦1,200 per mudu. Starch costs ₦1,800 per mudu.

A bag of flour sold for ₦64,000 and ₦2,000 per mudu. Sugar was ₦87,000 per bag and ₦3,500 per mudu.
Groundnut oil was ₦2,700 per bottle. Red oil was ₦2,100 per bottle. Custard was sold for ₦2,200.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), food inflation stood at 26.08% in January 2025 and slightly decreased to 23.51% in February.
Food inflation in Nigeria was recorded at 40.01% in March 2025, marking an increase from previous months.
The NBS data shows that food prices continue to rise despite efforts to curb inflation, affecting essential commodities like grains, cooking oils, and flour.
The increase in food inflation is a concern for many Nigerians, as it directly impacts the cost of living, especially for low-income households.
