The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, has appointed Prof. Michael Ebie Onyia as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of the University of Nigeria.

According to a statement by Inya Agha Egwu, Ag. Public Relations Officer, he took over from Prof. Romanus Ezeokonkwuo, who completed his tenure on November 14, 2025.

Prof. Onyia, a distinguished Professor of Structural Engineering in the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, brings a wealth of academic, administrative, and industry experience to his new role.

His appointment, which took effect from November 15, 2025, follows a long record of service to the University of Nigeria.

He previously served as Head, Department of Civil Engineering; Director, University of Nigeria Consultancy Services; and a member of the University of Nigeria Policy Committee on Public–Private Partnership, among other strategic roles.

Beyond the University, Prof. Onyia has held notable public service and industry positions, including Chief Executive Officer, Enugu State Environmental Protection Agency; Member, Board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), among others.

A consummate scholar, Prof. Onyia has authored over 90 peer-reviewed journal articles and more than 30 conference papers, which have made significant contributions to engineering research and scholarship.

Prof. Onyia is expected to deploy his broad expertise and leadership experiences to support the Vice-Chancellor in the effective administration and day-to-day operations of the University of Nigeria. He is married with five children.
