Queen Sheba: From throne of gold to light of faith

Amid the pages of history and divine revelation lies the awe-inspiring tale of Queen Sheba, a ruler of immense power whose journey from the heights of wealth and influence to the depths of spiritual enlightenment captivates hearts and minds.

Her transformation, as told in the Qur’an’s Surah An-Naml (The Ant), is not just a story of leadership and diplomacy but a profound narrative of humility, wisdom, and faith.

Let us delve into the life of this extraordinary woman whose legacy continues to inspire millions.

Queen and Her Kingdom of Splendour

Sheba ruled over one of the most prosperous kingdoms of her time, located in Saba, an ancient civilisation famed for its riches and grandeur. Her rule was marked by unmatched wealth, symbolised by her magnificent throne—a masterpiece of opulence that few could rival.

But beneath the surface of her thriving empire was a spiritual void. Sheba and her people worshipped the sun, a practice steeped in tradition but void of true guidance.

The Qur’an unveils this reality through the words of Prophet Solomon’s messenger, Hudhud, the Hoopoe bird:
“Indeed, I found a woman ruling them, and she has been given of all things, and she has a great throne. I found her and her people prostrating to the sun instead of Allah.” (Qur’an 27:23-24)

This discovery set the stage for a divine encounter that would forever alter the course of her life.

Letter That Changed Everything

Prophet Solomon (Sulaiman, peace be upon him), a king of unparalleled wisdom and divine blessings, sent Queen Sheba a letter. It was no ordinary correspondence but an invitation to embrace the truth and submit to the one true God, Allah.

“Indeed, it is from Solomon, and indeed, it reads: ‘In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Be not haughty with me but come to me in submission (as Muslims).'” (Qur’an 27:30-31)

Sheba, though a mighty queen, responded with remarkable composure. Instead of reacting with arrogance or hostility, she consulted her advisors and chose to investigate Solomon’s claims with wisdom and caution—a testament to her intellect and leadership.

Test of Greatness

When Queen Sheba journeyed to meet Solomon, she encountered a series of events that tested her understanding of power, wisdom, and truth. The most striking of these was the miraculous transport of her throne to Solomon’s court before her arrival—an act that left her astonished.

“She said, ‘It is as though it was it.’ [Solomon said], ‘We were given knowledge before her, and we have been Muslims [in submission to Allah].'” (Qur’an 27:42)

Through this display of divine power, Queen Sheba began to realise the might of Allah and the truth of Solomon’s message.

Moment of Enlightenment

The turning point in Queen Sheba’s journey came when she entered Solomon’s palace. Its dazzling design, including a crystal-clear floor that she mistook for water, left her in awe. She lifted her garments, thinking she was stepping into water, only to be gently corrected.

In that moment of humility, her heart opened to the light of faith. With sincerity and conviction, she declared:
“My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself, and I submit with Solomon to Allah, Lord of the worlds.” (Qur’an 27:44)

Her words were not just an admission of past mistakes but a powerful testament to the transformative power of truth.
