Rare Sun Halo with ‘Sundogs’ stuns residents in Jos

Story by Martha Gwary

Residents of Jos, the Plateau State capital, were treated to a rare and breathtaking sight on Tuesday as a luminous ring appeared around the sun, flanked by two bright spots on either side, sparking awe, curiosity and widespread reactions on social media.

The striking phenomenon, captured in photos and videos shared by residents, showed a glowing circular halo encircling the sun, with what appeared to be twin light orbs aligned horizontally — a spectacle many described as surreal and otherworldly.

Experts say the display is a natural atmospheric event known as a sun halo with sundogs (parhelia). It occurs when sunlight passes through ice crystals suspended in high-altitude cirrus clouds. These hexagonal ice crystals refract and reflect sunlight, forming a 22-degree halo around the sun, while the bright spots — the sundogs — appear on either side.

Jos, known for its cool climate and elevated terrain, often experiences atmospheric conditions favourable for such optical phenomena, though sightings of this clarity are considered uncommon.

While some residents interpreted the event through religious or spiritual lenses, scientists stress that the phenomenon poses no danger and is purely meteorological. “It’s a beautiful but harmless interaction of light and ice crystals in the upper atmosphere,” a weather observer explained.

The event drew crowds outdoors, with many pausing to photograph the sky and share their amazement. For some, it was a reminder of nature’s quiet spectacles; for others, a rare moment of collective wonder in the city.

As evening fell, the halo gradually faded as cloud conditions changed, leaving behind striking images — and conversations — that are likely to linger long after the sun set over the Plateau.
