Either out of ignorance, mischief, or a combination of both, the northern region of Nigeria has unfortunately become the target of unwarranted disparagement, derogatory epithets, and a relentless shift of blame. This troubling trend seems to stem from a carefully orchestrated agenda aimed at sowing discord within the region for political gains. Since the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern protectorates in 1914 and the subsequent emergence of political parties, this narrative has persisted. Dr. Umar Ardo’s response to Taiwo Olanegan’s attempt to diminish the North’s political significance in his article “The porous North: Why Arewa does not hold the ace” is a poignant reminder of the historical and cultural foundations that underpin the region’s political strength.
Dr. Umar Ardo astutely points out that Northern Nigeria’s political clout is not to be underestimated, as it is bolstered by cultural cohesion, linguistic unity, and demographic prominence. The Hausa language’s prevalence and the fusion of the Hausa-Fulani identity play pivotal roles in fostering a cohesive political environment within the North. Moreover, the North’s historical track record of demonstrating political unity during electoral processes, mobilizing a substantial voter base irrespective of party lines, solidifies its position as a key player in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape.
Contrary to popular belief, the North’s political influence remains steadfast, with historical alliances forged with various regions across Nigeria, including the South, emphasizing its strategic importance in national politics. In contrast, Southern Nigeria often grapples with political disunity and internal rivalries, as evidenced by the lack of a unified political front during the 2023 elections. The misconception that states like Kogi, Kwara, and Niger align with the South based on linguistic ties is decisively debunked, as these states have consistently leaned towards northern-led coalitions in significant elections since 1979, highlighting the enduring Northern influence in these regions.
The ethos of the “One North”envisioned by Sir Ahmadu Bello continues to guide the political landscape of Northern Nigeria, showcasing the region’s ability to embrace diversity within a cohesive cultural framework.
