The recent article titled “The Imperatives of Building ADC into Nigeria’s Next Governing Party” by Comrade Sanusi A. S. Maikudi presents a cogent and timely reflection on Nigeria’s current political juncture. At a moment when Nigerians are yearning—more than ever—for authentic, accountable leadership, the prevailing sentiment across the nation is characterized by frustration, disillusionment, and an escalating desire for transformation.
As citizens increasingly lose faith in traditional power blocs, the question of who can provide a credible alternative becomes ever more urgent. It is against this backdrop that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) finds itself under intensified scrutiny and heightened expectations.
Comrade Maikudi astutely identifies several pivotal imperatives that must be addressed if the ADC is to evolve from a marginal political entity into a genuinely viable governing party.
Central to his discourse is the necessity for a robust and credible opposition—not one predicated on opportunism or mere rhetoric, but anchored in vision, policy depth, and institutional integrity.

The ADC must unequivocally define and consistently adhere to a principled ideological framework. This should transcend superficial slogans and be profoundly embedded in the party’s identity, informing its policies, programs, and leadership selections.
For instance, the party could draw inspiration from successful political movements worldwide that have effectively communicated their core values to the electorate.
Moreover, the development of a Data-Driven, People-Centered Manifesto is paramount. Policy proposals must be pragmatic, research-informed, and attuned to the authentic needs of Nigerians. These policies should also reflect Nigeria’s intricate socio-cultural diversity—ensuring inclusivity and broad-based rerelevance.

For example, conducting extensive surveys and consultations with various segments of society could yield valuable insights for crafting policies that resonate with the populace.
Additionally, sustained Grassroots Engagement is imperative for the ADC to cultivate genuine credibility. It must forge connections with the grassroots—not solely during electoral campaigns but throughout the political continuum. This necessitates civic education, community development initiatives, and ongoing dialogue with citizens. Establishing community centers or holding regular town hall meetings could facilitate meaningful interactions between party members and the public.
Empowerment of Marginalized Voices, including youth, women, and civil society actors, is another critical aspect. These groups must not merely be included—they must be empowered. The ADC must construct internal structures and public platforms that enable these groups to influence the party’s trajectory and assume leadership roles.
Implementing mentorship programs or creating specialized task forces dedicated to addressing issues affecting marginalised communities could demonstrate the party’s commitment to inclusivity.
Furthermore, Internal Democracy and Transparency are essential for garnering public trust. No political party can assert the moral authority to lead a nation if it cannot govern itself with equity and discipline. Transparent primaries, participatory decision-making, and stringent adherence to party regulations are vital components. Implementing mechanisms for regular audits and establishing an independent ethics committee could enhance transparency within the party.
In conclusion, the African Democratic Congress faces a monumental task in transforming itself into Nigeria’s next governing party. By adhering to the imperatives articulated by Comrade Maikudi and taking concrete steps to embody integrity, fairness, inclusivity, and service, the ADC can pave the way for a new political epoch in Nigeria.
The road ahead is fraught with challenges, but with dedication, strategic planning, and unwavering commitment to the principles of good governance, the ADC possesses the potential to earn the trust and support of the Nigerian populace.
