Reps slash salaries by 50% to alleviate nationwide hunger crisis

In a display of solidarity and support for the economic hardship and hunger facing Nigerians, members of the House of Representatives have unanimously agreed to slash their salaries by 50 percent for a period of six months.

The decision came following the adoption of an amendment proposed by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu, urging lawmakers to make sacrifices to aid the struggling citizens amidst the current crisis.

Kalu’s amendment, which was added to a motion put forth by Rep Isiaka Ayokunle calling for dialogue with the government instead of nationwide protests, highlighted the importance of lawmakers contributing to the government’s efforts to address the escalating cost of food items and alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.

With this salary reduction, the 360 legislators will be forfeiting a total of N108 million monthly for the next six months in a bid to support the government’s initiatives.

The motion has been referred to the committees on Humanitarian Affairs, Finance, and Budget for implementation.
