Story from Kenneth AFOR, Lagos

After Saturday’s defeat to the president-elect, Joe Biden, some senior White House officials and key members of the Republican party have urged Donald Trump to concede.

This is coming after Trump reportedly said the election is far from over on Saturday afternoon.

“The simple fact is this election is far from over. Joe Biden has not been certified as the winner of any states, let alone any of the highly contested states headed for mandatory recounts, or states where our campaign has valid and legitimate legal challenges that could determine the ultimate victor,” said Trump.

Many have predicted that the out-going president would react this way even before the election.

However, he has been advised to file a suit as he had threatened during the week and also allow the votes to be recounted, according to one of his advisors, although his application to the Supreme Court on his purported claims of “voter fraud” was quashed by Judges in Nevada, Michigan and Georgia.

“He should allow the recounts to go forward, file whatever claims there are, and then if nothing changes he should concede,” said one Trump advisor.

“He should make sure every vote is counted and demand transparency. That puts him on solid rhetorical grounds,” said another former White House official.

Newsbreak learnt that Mark Meadows, White House Chief of Staff who was tested positive to COVID-19 is likely to convince the president to concede.

“President Trump is entitled to take the time he wants to absorb this. It was close and it’s not productive to demand an immediate concession.

“The best thing to keep this country together is to give the president a reasonable period of time to accept the results,” said Ari Fleischer, a former White House press secretary during George W Bush administration.
